Game Changer: Rivertown Crossings Officers Respond to Cardiac Arrest.

On December 7, 2023, at approximately 10:20 am, Rivertown Crossings Dispatch received reports of a 90-year-old male who had slipped and fallen near JC Penny’s.

Director of Security, Eric Hathorn was alerted to the situation when the responding officer requested assistance, reporting that the victim was badly injured and bleeding from the top of his head. Hathorn instructed the responding officer to retrieve the AED/Medical bag and proceeded to the scene.

Upon arrival, Hathorn observed a male lying on his back, bleeding from his head, and a female (later identified as his daughter) performing CPR.  Dispatch was notified to call the Fire and Medical Team for further assistance. Hathorn, with the responding officer, applied the AED pads. After administering one shock, the victim began to breathe but subsequently went unconscious again. Mall Property Manager Simran Singh also responded and assisted with CPR until the arrival of fire personnel, who utilized their automated chest compression device. Upon the arrival of AMR Ambulance and the Police, the male was placed on a stretcher and transported to St Mary’s Hospital for additional medical treatment.

After reviewing CCTV footage, it was observed that the victim, an elderly male, was sitting on his walker when he went into cardiac arrest, leaned over and fell to the ground.

It was later reported that the male is alive and thankful for the quick response by Security and Mall staff.

On February 12, 2024, Director Hathorn received a Commendation from the Grandville Police Chief and Board of Awards for his actions.
